As part of the Cities Summit, the Whale Pop-up brought C7, Sanca Azul, Voice of the Ocean, IBO, and Route Brasil together on Ipanema Beach. Attendees assembled 25 large canvases into the image of a life-size humpback whale, transforming many individual pieces into one public statement about ocean conservation.

Turning a constraint into a new event

Route Brasil and C7 had originally planned a beach cleanup and collective embrace, but delays in official approvals forced the team to change course. With 48 hours to build a new event, the group redirected its energy into the whale painting—an exercise in coordination, resilience, and creative public engagement.

Storytelling as shared infrastructure

The final image made collaboration visible. Just as the whale only appeared when every canvas was placed together, useful urban solutions depend on many actors working in context. The event carried forward the Rio Ocean Forum message: together, we are one ocean.

The Whale Pop-up is both an artwork and an invitation. It asks what becomes possible when communities, institutions, artists, and environmental practitioners see their work as connected pieces of the same system.
